Washington D.C., May 7, 2025 – Former United States President Donald Trump offered his thoughts on the rising tensions between India and Pakistan, calling the recent Indian military strikes against Pakistani territory “disgraceful,” as he expressed hope that both nuclear-armed countries can resolve their differences quickly and peacefully.
On Tuesday at a press conference at a business summit in Florida, Donald Trump was questioned about Pakistan’s claims of downing five Indian fighter jets and damaging military installations as retaliatory action for Indian strikes.
Trump expressed his sentiments by noting, “I find the situation regrettable and unnecessary, especially given the amazing people of both India and Pakistan. What’s happening there is dangerous and I hope they can reach an amicable solution quickly.
Former U.S. leader Teddy Kennedy, who acted as mediator between India and Pakistan during their increased tensions in 2019, stressed the necessity of dialogue as the only sustainable path forward. “I’ve worked with both sides before; they need to talk, not fight; war is not the solution,” he stated.
Trump’s remarks follow an alarming escalation in hostilities between Pakistan and India. According to reports by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), its military retaliated with strikes after what it describes as India’s unprovoked aggression across the Line of Control (LoC). According to ISPR reports, this counteroffensive led to five IAF fighter jets being downed as well as destruction of brigade headquarters and several forward checkposts along the LoC.
India has not confirmed losses but has acknowledged “significant cross-border engagement.” According to their Ministry of Defence, they are closely observing and maintaining an increased state of operational readiness.
U.S. State Department issued a statement calling for calm and restraint, “deeply concerned by rising tensions” and encouraging both nations “to de-escalate through diplomatic channels”. China and UN echoed these calls for peace and moderation.
Political analysts’ reactions to Donald Trump’s statements varied widely. While some noted his blunt style often garners headlines but is devoid of nuance in delicate geopolitical matters, others saw Trump’s comments as an indicator that international observers are watching closely and expect restraint on both sides.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister pledged his country’s dedication to upholding its sovereignty during a late-evening broadcast and offered constructive engagement as a way out. India, however, has yet to make an official response or take an official position regarding Pakistan’s retaliatory claims or Trump’s comments.
As diplomatic efforts intensify behind the scenes, world leaders remain hopeful that tensions between South Asian rivals won’t turn into wider conflict.
